Canada Day was 2 days ago on July 1, 2011. This weekend just so happened to be a really nice, hot weekend. We have enjoyed the holiday thoroughly. On Friday we went to see The Spoons, which was a big band that formed in 1979 in Burlington, ON, which is where we were to see them. They are making a comeback and they did a great job on Friday. I don’t really know any of their songs, but I love seeing live music. I don’t have to know any words as long as I can bop along to the beats. On Sunday, we are going to see some other bands at a local festival and I will write on that after we go.
After watching, dancing and having a great time listening to the band, came the fireworks. Burlington, ON did a magnificent light show w/ a ton of fireworks. I don’t know what it is about fireworks, but they are just fascinating. I have a smile on my face the whole time. They had all types of fireworks–colors, smiley face, designs, you name it. We all had a great time, full of smiles and full on ice cream. Next, was patiently working our way out of the crowds to get back home. What a great night!
On Saturday, we hosted a bbq at our place. We love to entertain and now that we have all of our landscaping in, we are outside all the time. We started our day w/ a 5mile (8km) jog w/ 400 stairs and then came back to do yoga on our patio. There is nothing as nice as going for a long jog and coming back to yoga under our cabana w/ our bubbling rock fountain trickling in the background. Then, we had to tidy up a bit and go to the grocery store to get all of the delicious eats for the night. We had veggie and meat burgers, chicken skewers, mediterranean orzo (on my recipe page), potato salad, falafel balls (veggie and delicious w/ tzatziki) and one of the couples bought cupcakes from The Love of Cake in Toronto. Everything was fantastic. It was a really hot day, but everyone came over around 7pm, so there was plenty of shade and light breeze.
We all had such a great time. Most of the people were friends of MG’s since he was about 5 yrs old. All of us have seen one another here and there and definitely get together whenever we can. It was just extra special b/c it has been a long time since ALL of us were together. No ab class needed yesterday b/c I got a full workout from laughing at all the stories. It was constant entertainment all night. I don’t think things could have gone any better. It is amazing to think how long all of these guys have been friends. They all keep in touch w/ one another and now wives, girlfriends, even children have been added to the group. It takes work to keep long-lasting friendships alive, but so worth it. These guys have stories of each other all the way back to the start of school. That’s special.
It is so easy to get “too busy” and not keep in touch, but what a huge chunk of life you’re losing. In some ways you are losing a part of you! These types of friends are worth any effort you have to put in. Make the effort, not the excuses. Call, meet, have coffee whatever. Don’t be too busy, too tired, take for granted. We are lucky to have the dear friends we do and we should all try harder to keep them. Thank you all to a wonderful night, a great Canada Day weekend and loads of laughs and memories! Cheers!
